Spain on top of the world

Champions of Europe and now champions of the world, Spain captured football's Holy Grail for the first time with a 1-0 victory over the Netherlands thanks to Andres Iniesta’s 116th-minute strike at Soccer City.
The solitary goal came with penalties looming as substitutes Fernando Torres and Cesc Fabregas combined to play in Iniesta and the little midfielder drove emphatically across Maarten Stekelenburg and into the far corner. With this victory – their fourth successive single-goal win in South Africa – Spain became the eighth name on the FIFA World Cup™ Trophy and also the first European team to have triumphed on a different continent. For the Netherlands, who lost defender John Heitinga to a red card in extra time, there is only the heartache of another tale of what might have been after they completed a hat-trick of Final losses.
This was a match preceded by much talk of two like-minded footballing cultures, of the influence of Dutchmen like Johan Cruyff and Rinus Michels, of 'tiki taka' and Total Football. In many ways, as the first 116 minutes showed, it was also a case of the irresistible force versus the immovable object. The Dutch had won 14 straight games to get to the Final, in qualifying and the tournament proper, and Spain 15 out of 16, their only slip the defeat by Switzerland in their first game here in South Africa.
It was the Spanish found their stride first, living up to their pre-game billing as favourites. Vicente del Bosque's side who dominated possession and created the early chances. With the Dutch penned inside their half, Maarten Stekelenburg had to make a save after five minutes, diving low to stop a Sergio Ramos header from Xavi's free-kick from the right. Gerard Pique looked poised to follow up only to be denied by a combination of Joris Mathijsen and Dirk Kuyt.
Ramos came again in the tenth minute, beating Kuyt on the right and driving in a low centre that Heitinga deflected behind. From the corner came another scare for the Netherlands. Xavi played the ball back to Xabi Alonso whose cross went beyond the far post to David Villa but the in-form No7 sliced his volley into the side-netting.
After those near things, however, both defences got on top with none of the flair players on either side able to take a grip on proceedings. Instead the yellow-card count began to rise with Nigel de Jong becoming the fifth player in Howard Webb's notebook by the time the half-hour mark arrived.
With the orange sections of the 84,490 Soccer City crowd finding their voice, Bert van Marwijk's men almost gave them something to sing about from a corner in the 37th minute. Robben rolled the ball to Mark van Bommel on the edge of the box and although he failed to make a clean connection he unwittingly diverted the ball on to the unmarked Mathijsen but the defender missed his kick. As half-time approached, Iker Casillas had barely had a save to make but entering stoppage time, he had to be alert to deny Robben at his near post as a spell of Dutch pressure ended with the winger spearing in a low shot from the corner of the box.
Puyol, Spain's semi-final matchwinner, showed his aerial threat once more minutes after the restart when he rose above Heitinga and headed to the far post but Joan Capdevila failed to make contact. The game was gradually opening up and the Dutch spurned a golden opportunity in the 62nd minute when Wesley Sneijder sent Robben running clear. Casillas came to Spain's rescue, deflecting the shot behind with his right foot when falling the wrong way.
Spain coach Del Bosque had already sent on Jesus Navas for Pedro on the hour and the winger helped pick a hole in the Dutch defence in the 70th minute. Xavi sent him flying down the right into the box and when Heitinga failed to deal with Navas's low cross, the ball fell to Villa who looked odds-on to score only to see his effort deflected behind. Ramos was equally profligate after 78 minutes when he headed over a Xavi centre when unmarked, after Villa had forced another corner.
Spain were looking the more likely winners and it took Sneijder of all people to foil Iniesta with a smart tackle after his jinking run into the box. Yet Robben's pace was a persistent threat and theOranje No11 almost embarrassed Puyol in the 82nd minute, speeding clear of the Spain defender when second-favourite to reach a through-ball. Resisting Pique's attempt to tackle too, he was foiled only by Casillas, the captain saving at Robben's feet as the Dutchman tried to round him.
Extra time began with opportunities for Spain. Xavi failed to connect when well positioned and when the ball ran to Villa, his shot went wide off an orange shirt. Substitute Fabregas then broke clear on to Iniesta's through-ball but was foiled by Stekelenburg. Mathijsen headed wide from a corner but like waves, Spanish attacks kept rolling on to the Netherlands back line and Navas was close with a shot deflected into the side-netting.
Torres replaced Villa midway through the extra period and Spain gained a man advantage four minutes later with Heitinga's dismissal for pulling back Iniesta on the edge of the box, the offence earning him a second yellow. Iniesta would not be denied, however, and his fine late strike put Spain in the history books and shattered the men in orange.

Miami Heat LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, and Their Future

Fresh off LeBron James' decision to join Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh with the Miami Heat, the organization threw a welcoming party Friday night.
More than 13,000 fans stood for hours in line outside of the American Airlines Arena to get their first look at the three superstar teammates.
Although jerseys have not gone on sale, people were already sporting No. 6 James Heat t-shirts.
Following a rather theatrical entrance onto the stage, the trio sat down with Eric Reid and Jose PaƱeda to answer questions in front of the fans.
It was televised by local TV and ESPN.
After that, they met with the media and spoke about free agency, winning, and Hollywood.
I was there in person as a member of the media and decided to come up with a list of 10 things we learned from the trio (as well as Erik Spoelstra and Pat Riley)

Method Man Latest Record "Tax Evasion"

His method was illegal.
That's the stark admission from Wu-Tang Clan member Method Man, who pleaded guilty Monday in a Staten Island, New York, courtroom to a misdemeanor charge of attempted failure to pay taxes.
As part of a deal with prosecutors, the 39-year-old hip-hopster, real name Clifford Smith, was sentenced to a conditional discharge, which means he'll avoid jail time after paying approximately $106,000 in restitution, penalties and interest he owes to New York State. The arrest will also be expunged from his record if he stays out of trouble.
Method Man was busted Oct. 5, 2009, for failing to file returns and pay state income tax from 2004 to 2007.
"Failure to pay your taxes is not a victimless crime," said Richmond County District Attorney Daniel Donovan, Jr. "In these days of massive budget shortfalls and service cuts, tax evasion is a crime against all New Yorkers. Whether you are a celebrity or an average joe, you will be investigated, arrested and prosecuted."
Judge Alan J. Meyer approved the plea arrangement on Monday. A rep for the How High rapper was unavailable for comment.

Drug lord terrorizing Mexico is a U.S. citizen

The Houston Chronicle reported a grisly scene from Taxco, Mexico: The decomposing remains of 56 bodies and four heads were found at the bottom of an old, 600-foot-deep silver-mine shaft. Investigators say many of the victims were thrown into the pit while they were still alive.
Whom do Mexican authorities blame? None other than Texas-born Edgar Valdez Villarreal, who has reached the second-in-command position in the Sinaloa drug cartel. In that capacity, he's been waging a bloody turf war against the rival Gulf cartel. Authorities say Valdez ordered his henchmen to dump the cartel's enemies in the mine. Around Taxco, which is about 100 miles southwest of Mexico City in the state of Guerrero, the war has claimed 400 lives so far this year.
U.S. authorities have been trying to catch Valdez for years — he is the only American citizen known to hold a high-ranking position in a cartel. An indictment against Valdez unsealed in Atlanta, Georgia, last week accuses him of supplying thousands of pounds of cocaine to the Atlanta area. (He now has open indictments against him in three U.S. states.) Valdez was "chief enforcer" for the Sinaloa gang's boss, Arturo BeltrĆ”n Leyva; when Leyva broke away to start his own cartel, Valdez went with him. But when Leyva died in shootout with Mexican authorities late last year, that left Valdez jockeying for control of the cartel, reports Jason Buch in the San Antonio Express-News. It's unclear just now, however, whether he can claim control of the new cartel.
It is clear, however, that Valdez is the most powerful U.S. member of any Mexican drug cartel — a distinction that the federal Drug Enforcement Agency recently confirmed. The U.S. State Department is offering $2 million for information that would lead to his arrest, while the Mexican government is offering a $2.3 million bounty.
The 36-year-old used to play high school football in Laredo, Texas, and was nicknamed "La Barbie" for his light hair and eyes by his coach. The spring of his senior year of high school, he was arrested for criminally negligent homicide, purportedly after  speeding in his car and colliding into another car, killing the driver. He was not convicted at trial.

Bobby Brown Gets Engaged

Bobby Brown proposed to his longtime girlfriend of nearly three years, Alicia Etheridge, on stage in Florida over the weekend.
Playing a show at the Funk Fest concert at Jacksonville's Metro Park on Friday night, according to Florida Times-Union, Brown was joined onstage by Etheridge with their 11-month-old son, Cassius, on hand. He then got on one knee and asked Etheridge, his manager, to marry him.
Speaking to the Florida Times-Union, fans said that the crowd went crazy when Brown popped the question. "We shouted, we screamed," Carol Pearsall told the paper. "We supported him." Her husband, Paul, added, "Hopefully he'll get it right this time."
Brown was very infamously married to R&B diva Whitney Houston for 15 years. The two have daughter, Bobbi Kristina, 17. Brown, who appeared on "Celebrity Fit Club," also has three other children from previous relationships.
While Brown has remained under the radar that last few years, Houston released an album last year, I Look to You. During the publicity tour, she spoke openly about her troubled relationship with Brown. "He was my drug," Houston, 46, said. "I didn't do anything without him. I wasn't getting high by myself. It was me and him together, and we were partners, and that's what my high was — him. He and I being together, and whatever we did, we did it together. No matter what, we did it together."

Infant, children's Tylenol, Motrin recalled in U.S.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Saturday urged consumers to stop using liquid Tylenol, Motrin, Benadryl and Zyrtec medicines for children and infants after a broad recall announced by the manufacturer, although it said the chance of serious problems was remote.
Johnson & Johnson's consumer division announced a broad recall of products, including certain liquid infant's and children's Tylenol, Motrin, Zyrtec, and Benadryl products late on Friday.
A full list of affected products made by McNeil Consumer Healthcare is available at http://www.mcneilproductrecall.com
"We want to be certain that consumers discontinue using these products," FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg said in a statement.
"While the potential for serious health problems is remote, Americans deserve medications that are safe, effective and of the highest quality. We are investigating the products and facilities associated with this recall and will provide updates as we learn more," she said.
McNeil said it was recalling the products in consultation with the FDA after discovering manufacturing deficiencies that could affect the quality, purity or potency of the medicines.
The FDA said some of the products may not meet required quality standards, and parents and caregivers should stop administering them to children and switch to generic brands, which are not affected by the recall.
They said consumers should not administer adult strength medicine to infants or children since that could result in serious harm.
Some of the products affected by the recall may contain a higher concentration of active ingredient than specified; others contain inactive ingredients that may not meet internal testing requirements; and others may contain tiny particles, the FDA said.
The FDA said the chance of an adverse reaction was remote, but urged consumers to contact their doctors and the FDA if their children exhibited any symptoms.

Simon Cowell "Sad" Siobhan Magnus Was Kicked Off Idol

Simon Cowell looked sad after hearing that Siobhan Magnus was going home on Wednesday night's American Idol, a show witness tells UsMagazine.com.

Also bummed at the news: fan favorite Crystal Bowersox, who bowed her head when the results were read, and Siobhan's sister, mom and friends, who cried through her exit song.
(Siobhan was in the bottom three alongside Michael "Big Mike" Lynche and Casey James, who all got a group hug from Ryan Seacrest during a commercial break.)

When Siobhan sang her final screaming note, Simon was clearly smiling, even though he had turned away from her.

After finishing her song, the 20-year-old Cape Cod, Mass. resident gave Lee DeWyze a full body hug and stopped to talk to judge Kara DioGuardi, who went running up from her seat to say goodbye.

In the audience: Cameron Diaz and Antonio Banderas, promoting their newest Shrek flick. Diaz spent the most time chatting with Ellen DeGeneres and Seacrest, while Banderas chilled with Randy Jackson.

"Cameron seemed in a great mood, laughing and smiling and waving at everybody," the witness says.

Wednesday night's Idol was full of performances. The Rascal Flatts rehearsed a song during a commercial break, and then spent some time chatting with Jackson. Shakira then hit the stage barefoot with Rascal Flatts.

After the show wrapped, Lady Gaga pre-taped her performance in a set so elaborate, the crew spent three hours the night before building it. She seemed to be singing live, and was definitely playing the piano live. She rehearsed a few times. It airs on the May 5 episode.
